Katie Reed

  • Biography

Katie Reed oversees Afton’s work in Early Care and Education and K12 Education. Since joining Afton in 2014, she has supported dozens of state and local agencies at the intersection of finance, strategy, and governance, with a particular interest in engaging diverse stakeholders in major policy and systems change initiatives. Highlights of Katie’s work at Afton include planning for, managing, and leading Afton’s work on Illinois’ Smart Start initiative, and facilitating the Great Start for All Minnesota Children Task Force and the Illinois Governor’s Early Childhood Funding Commission. Katie’s work in K12 systems includes leading the Illinois State Board of Education’s response to the ESSA Financial Transparency Requirement, the District of Columbia’s Comprehensive Financial Reporting Standards initiative, Boston Public Schools’ Reimagine School Funding Initiative, and many others.

Prior to joining Afton, Katie served as Chief of Staff for Innovation & Incubation at Chicago Public Schools, where she led policy development for the district’s Student-based Budgeting Initiative, co-authored the Facilities Master Plan, and led project management for the district’s 2013 restructuring. Earlier in her career, Katie spent nearly a decade in progressing roles in financial and operational management for Baxter Healthcare and Ford Motor Company. She earned an MBA from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, and a BBA in finance from the University of Notre Dame. Katie also serves on the board of the Rare Kidney Disease Foundation.
