Provides senior leadership from over 15 years in finance, education, in-house financial management, facility financings, board trainings, complex transactions, and impact-focused work.
Fulton’s work at Afton focuses on financial strategy and planning for school systems and other not-for-profit organizations. He works with organizational leaders, executives and board members to instill best practices, strong financial governance, analytic decision making, and long-term financial strategies. Fulton enjoys working on complex projects and problem-solving initiatives such as facility financing, growth and restructuring planning, scenario analyses, and other transformational financial events central to an organization’s future.
Fulton is motivated to do this work because he believes in strong public schools and strong public institutions. Afton’s work brings analysis and strategy to bear on some of the most complicated and foundational issues we face as a society. He feels fortunate to play a role in supporting these organizations as they build up communities, work towards more equitable resource distributions, and make a difference in people’s lives. Fulton deeply appreciates being able to partner with clients who are doing this incredible and important work every day.
Fulton’s leadership roles include:
- Advising a 16-school network resetting their financial strategy to break even after stimulus and other one-time funds.
- Supporting a merger along with navigating the multi-faceted financial dynamics that come with organizational and systems changes.
- Providing analysis and strategy for a school’s first time acquiring and building a permanent facility, and helping them understand the guardrails, key metrics, and sources of capital required to achieve affordability and financial sustainability.
- Working with a new school founder on best practices for their board finance committee.
- Modeling the growth of an innovative school network from 2 locations to 10 locations in two very different regions of a state.
- Conducting diligence on 67-school network for a philanthropic foundation to decide on an investment into the school system for a community.
Before joining Afton, Fulton was the Managing Director of Finance for Rocky Mountain Prep, a network of public charter schools in Denver, Colorado. He began his career working in finance in the US, London, and China advising on complex financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions. Fulton has taken this foundation in finance and applied it towards his passion for education.
Fulton holds a bachelor’s in economics from Williams College and a dual-degree MBA and M.Ed from the University of Michigan. Fulton was an Education Pioneers Fellow in Detroit and a member of the Broad Residency program at the Yale School of Management.
