Gerald Liu joined Afton Partners in 2021. Gerald has over 17 years of experience working in K-12 education finance, operations, and policymaking. Prior to joining Afton, Gerald worked for 11 years at the Office of Budget and Management at the Chicago Public Schools and was responsible for financial budget modeling, portfolio management of over $450M, and led efforts to improve funding equity at 600+ Chicago Public Schools. Gerald went on to lead the day-to-day and financial operations at Kids First Chicago, a parent-focused education advocacy and policy start-up, and then moved to become the CFO at Chicago International Charter School, the 2nd largest charter school network in Chicago, providing financial management and controls at 14 network schools.
As a firm believer in equity, Gerald has previously served as an advisor for the Secretary of Education in the Illinois Governor’s Office and worked with Chicago Public Schools to encourage the design of more equitable funding distributions that benefit students most impacted by community disinvestment and structural racism.
Along with being a graduate of the University of Michigan, Gerald was a visiting fellow with Education Pioneers and received a certificate in Educational Finance from Georgetown University. Gerald is currently pursuing his MBA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
